{"id":209,"date":"2006-05-10T15:15:08","date_gmt":"2006-05-10T22:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.andrewandlisa.org\/?p=209"},"modified":"2006-05-10T15:15:08","modified_gmt":"2006-05-10T22:15:08","slug":"new-ways-to-read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.andrewandlisa.org\/?p=209","title":{"rendered":"New Ways to Read?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve always been somewhat of a reading traditionalist.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I like reading books.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I like pages.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I like the smell of old books.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 When I open a classic like Plutarch&#8217;s <em>Lives<\/em> inthe 1910 printing from the Harvard Classics series, the scent is unmistakable.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s like I&#8217;m breathing rarefied air.<\/p>\n<p>So this new step is a real departure for me.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve started experimenting with book content in two new electronic forms.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I bought my first e-book the other day (not counting the Bible that I purchased for my last Palm Pilot) from a company called 37signals.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s their manifesto on how to create new companies based around simple web application.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a bit disappointing as a read.<\/p>\n<p>Today I realized that I&#8217;ve been subscribed to audible.com for a few months now.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 It was one of those trial memberships that I forgot to cancel, and I now have enough credit to download 7 full audiobooks and listen to them on my computer, CDs, or my iPod.<\/p>\n<p>Configuring my computer to download the books was a little bit of a challenge.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I actually had to call audible.com&#8217;s tech support, but I solved my own problem while I was on hold with them (and explained to them how I&#8217;d solved it, in case someone else has that particular problem).<\/p>\n<p>So, the first book I downloaded is called <em>The Search<\/em> by John Battelle.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s subtitled <em>How Google and its rivals rewrote the rules of business and changed out culture.<\/em>\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ll let you know how it is.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Should be 10 hours worth of interesting listening, at the very least.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve always been somewhat of a reading traditionalist.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I like reading books.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I like pages.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I like the smell of old books.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 When I open a classic like Plutarch&#8217;s Lives inthe 1910 printing from the Harvard Classics series, the scent is unmistakable.\u00c3\u0192\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s like I&#8217;m breathing rarefied air.
