There are lots of them out there in different price ranges, and many serve different functions.  I may recommend a sporty little Honda when you were looking for a Lotus. Or a Mini Cooper when you wanted a big 4&#215;4 Yukon.  But there&#8217;s one thing everyone wants from a camera, and that&#8217;s good pictures.  Here are two cameras that come with the Andrew Stamp Of Approval &#8482;.  I&#8217;ll try to elucidate the use cases for each one to aid in your buying decision.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dpreview.com\/reviews\/panasonicdmclx3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Panasonic Lumix LX3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the camera you buy if you want something that fits in your pocket.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not the cheapest camera you can buy that&#8217;ll fit in your pocket, but it&#8217;s probably the best in this class.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 They retail for just under $500, and I&#8217;d like to shoot this camera for a while.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s essentially a Leica camera (snobby art student camera brand) with a cheaper brand name on it.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 One of the biggest benefits to buying this camera is that you won&#8217;t be tempted to buy any lenses for it; it doesn&#8217;t change lenses.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 You can buy some adapters to make it act like it has a wide-angle or telephoto lens, but you won&#8217;t be tempted to plunk down another 4 grand to buy the good glass.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dpreview.com\/reviews\/nikond90\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nikon D-90<\/a> \/ <a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dpreview.com\/reviews\/nikond40\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nikon D-40<\/a><\/p>\n<p>These are the cameras you want if you&#8217;d like to really learn photography.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I think an SLR camera (one you can change the lenses on) is the best way to put yourself in the driver&#8217;s seat.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 You say you&#8217;d rather buy Canon cameras?\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Well, those will work just fine, too.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 The best camera brand to buy is the one that all your friends shoot.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 You can swap lenses and advice with each other most easily that way.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 The D40 is in the $400-$500 range, while the D90 will set you back about a Grand.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 With either of these cameras, you&#8217;ll have the opportunity to buy lenses later on.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Even though lenses can be wicked-expensive, they really unlock a lot of the potential in your camera.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 You can do some <a title=\"Photo 1 - Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/shinnphoto\/3312444513\/\" target=\"_blank\">neat<\/a> <a title=\"Photo 2 - Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/shinnphoto\/3309715320\/\" target=\"_blank\">stuff<\/a> <a title=\"Photo 3 - Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/shinnphoto\/3306254908\/\" target=\"_blank\">with<\/a> <a title=\"Photo 4 - Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/shinnphoto\/3297871937\/\" target=\"_blank\">good<\/a> <a title=\"Photo 5 - Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/shinnphoto\/3269899579\/\" target=\"_blank\">glass<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Don't click on this or buy me this camera unless you really, really love me\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dpreview.com\/reviews\/nikond3x\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nikon D3X<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the camera to buy if you&#8217;re buying a gift for me.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>But, seriously, people make good picture, not cameras.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I had a great time a week or two ago shooting a <a title=\"Opens in a new window - classic student camera\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pentax_K1000\" target=\"_blank\">Pentax K-1000<\/a>.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s old and manual-everything, but I shoot it to remind myself that I can make good photos without a computer, and without my <a title=\"Nikon D3 - Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dpreview.com\/reviews\/nikond3\/\" target=\"_blank\">fancy<\/a> <a title=\"Nikon D-700 - Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dpreview.com\/reviews\/nikond700\/\" target=\"_blank\">cameras<\/a>.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 So no matter what camera you have or which you end up buying, go enjoy taking pictures with it.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I promise that more pixels don&#8217;t equate to more joy.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Mostly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s kind of like asking which car you should drive.
