{"id":768,"date":"2012-02-12T18:28:39","date_gmt":"2012-02-13T01:28:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.andrewandlisa.org\/?p=768"},"modified":"2012-02-12T18:33:01","modified_gmt":"2012-02-13T01:33:01","slug":"goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.andrewandlisa.org\/?p=768","title":{"rendered":"Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Insert standard statement about the time between blog posts, along with\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0inevitable\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0apology, here.)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m reading about goals for a leadership and organizational behavior course I&#8217;m taking. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0The reading is a little academic in nature, which I really appreciate. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Some of the important things I&#8217;ve learned (that are borne out by actual, peer-reviewed research):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People tend to set higher goals for themselves in the workplace than their supervisors would have set.<\/li>\n<li>Higher goals lead to higher achievement.<\/li>\n<li>Goals that are shared are more likely to be accomplished.<\/li>\n<li>The process of setting and working on goals, not the prospect of reward, is what actually improves performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So what personal goals am I working on? \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;ll share a few.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To study 64 hours for each of the two classes I&#8217;m taking this semester. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0It should probably be more, but this is the amount I feel I can actually achieve.<\/li>\n<li>To exercise at least 5 days per week.<\/li>\n<li>To be consistent with reading the Bible.<\/li>\n<li>To avoid checking my e-mail (and looking at Facebook) before 1pm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lofty goals, you say? Aye, say I. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0They wouldn&#8217;t be worthy if they weren&#8217;t. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0So what am I doing to achieve these goals? \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Well, setting them was a good start. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0But I didn&#8217;t stop there. Measuring them is the next step. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Here&#8217;s where to tech comes in. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0I use a series of specialized iPhone apps to record my progress. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Well, I&#8217;ve been to the gym 29 times (and I&#8217;ve been running twice) since January 1st. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0If you include the running, that&#8217;s just barely more than 5 days per week. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Besides tracking, I also set out my gym clothes next to the bed before I go to sleep. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Help me to actually get up and get it done in the morning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/bible\/id282935706?mt=8\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"791\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.andrewandlisa.org\/?attachment_id=791\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.andrewandlisa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bible.png?fit=187%2C186&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"187,186\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Bible\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.andrewandlisa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bible.png?fit=187%2C186&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-791 alignleft\" title=\"Bible\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.andrewandlisa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bible.png?resize=150%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.andrewandlisa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bible.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.andrewandlisa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bible.png?w=187&amp;ssl=1 187w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I use the great <strong><a title=\"Opens in a new window or tab\" href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/bible\/id282935706?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\">Bible<\/a><\/strong> app from <strong><a title=\"Opens in a new window or tab\" href=\"http:\/\/YouVersion.com\" target=\"_blank\">YouVersion.com<\/a><\/strong> to both read the Bible and track my progress. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0They have pre-built reading plans to help you set and achieve goals with your Bible reading. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0There&#8217;s also a feature that will actually read the Bible to you, and this is what I use. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0I have a set time every day when I listen &#8211; it&#8217;s first thing in the morning. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0I listen while I get dressed, get to the gym, and warm up. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0My only beef with this app is that the audio tends to cut out about 2\/3 of the time if you change internet sources (ie move from wi-fi at the house to a 3G connection as you travel. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0How am I doing on progress toward this goal? So I can pretty much always \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0able to log my progress, no matter where I happen to be working. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0This one is a little less automated, but it&#8217;s still working. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0I use <a title=\"Opens in a new window or tab\" href=\"http:\/\/smilesoftware.com\/TextExpander\/\" target=\"_blank\">Text Expander<\/a> and a keyboard shortcut to automatically insert a datestamp and timestamp.
