Art Hop

Last night Lisa and I went with my Seminar in New Ventures class to Art Hop. Art Hop happens the first Thursday evening of every month in Fresno. It’s an opening of many different kinds of art studios in Downtown Fresno. We started our Art Hop tour at the city’s historic Bus Barn, which has been turned into the Art Barn after a group of artists took it off the city’s hands for a $1 purchase price and $250,000 in maintenance. It was really cool to walk around and see artists of all different types and calibers, ranging from the part-time after-hours school teacher to the man who sells his paintings at galleries nationwide. I enjoyed being able to stand in front of each piece of art and ask the artist about it. That really enriched the entire experience for me. If any Shinnfans happen to be in Fresno on the first Thursday of every month (after this semester, of course), I’d be happy to join you and hop over to Art Hop!

Happy Friday,
Andrew

Google’s Calculator

Alright, Shinnfans, we all know Google’s a great search tool. But did you know that it also works as a calculator? All you have to do is enter your terms (6*9, for example) and it will calculate for you. It will even calculate the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Go ahead; try it. Go to google and search for “the answer to life, the universe, and everything“. It’ll spit out the right answer. I didn’t believe it until I tried it, either. Then go to the Wikipedia and find out why it does this. You’ll be fascinated.

Happy Googling,
Andrew

Word verification

Well, friends, the day has come that people have started spamming the comments section of our treasured blog. There’s an easy way around that: word verification. I’ve turned it on. It means an extra step when posting, but it should keep our discussion free of ads for tarps, glycobiology, and viagara. What this means is that you’ll see a little box with a sort of warped word or series of letters in it. All you have to do it type what you see and you’ll be able to post. It’s one very small extra step, but it should keep us all tarp-free. Sorry I had to do this, and I hope it doesn’t deter from your liberal, wild-and-free loquacious posting on this blog.

Thanks!
Andrew

Blingo

Alright, friends, here’s the latest in the wide world of cool new internet stuff. It’s called Blingo. You use it as a serch engine (it’s powered by Google, so you know you’ll get good searches), and the first 10 times you search every day, you run the risk of winning cool prizes, like an iPod. If you invite someone else to join and they win, you win the same prize! So, in the grand tradition of tupperware, pyramid schemes, and other offenses against humanity, I’m inviting YOU (yes, YOU!) to join Blingo as my Blingo friend. Use it and try to win, and maybe I’ll win something cool, too! Just click on the icon below, and all will be cool.

Cheesily,
Andrew

Week 10…

… is up on Fred’s Place. Click here (new window) to see it. Click here (new window) to see previous weeks. If you haven’t looked in a while, it’s fun to look back and see where we’ve been and what we’ve done. Also, I got a decent response on the “Where I do Stuff” series, so I’ll be working on that later today.

Comments on Week 10?

New Photo Series

Shinnfans,

I’m thinking about doing a new photo series here on the ‘blog. It’ll be called, “Where I do stuff.” Inspired by something Dad said before I left, it’ll be a series of photos of the places I carry out normal, everyday activities. Like what my rack looks like, where I eat, where I log onto the computer, etc. Are you interested? If so, please let me know in the comments below. If I get enough positive response, I’ll go ahead with the series and post a new picture every day.

Thanks,
Andrew

Ode to the Walmart!

I went to the Walmart today to buy some school supplies as I prepare for the possibility of having a teaching position for the fall. It turned out to be a successful trip!

I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when the cashier rang up the crayon packs. I purchased 10 packs of Rose Art 24 count crayons. You know, just the normal packages. They were $0.09 each. What a deal or should I say steal! 🙂 It’s like they’re giving them away! Needless to say, I went away a happy customer.

I just had to share!
Lisa

Rumor has it…

That Starbucks is coming to Reedley in August of 2005!
Shouts of “Yahoo!” “Hooray!” & “Finally!” can be heard from all over the town by Starbucks connoisseurs. Some in the town aren’t so happy about the worldwide company moving into the SMALL town of Reedley because of the potentially negative effect on local coffee shops. (Isn’t that always the response of small towns to big business?) To my knowledge, there are only a few ‘mom and pop’ coffee shops in town some of which are only open a few hours per day. I don’t know if these will really see a negative impact because of Starbucks. Time will tell. The market may shift, but we smalltowners will have Starbucks at our fingertips! Here’s just one more reason to look forward to August!
